We’ve all been there – one minute you’re in the shower shampooing away and the next you’ve got strands of hair all over your fingers and the shower floor. Hair loss is not something that we often chat about amongst friends but many of us experience it to some degree. Whether you’ve been noticing a few extra strands falling out here and there or it’s something you’ve been experiencing for a while, hair loss is not fun! We’ve got a few tips and tricks for you to try in order to minimise and help with hair loss.
Avoid hairstyles that pull your hair
While our hair is quite flexible, it can only be pulled and stretched so far before it becomes damaged. Hairstyles such as tight braids and slick ponytails look cute but can actually be doing more harm than good! If you are experiencing hair loss, opt for a hairstyle that’s a little looser.
Minimise heat styling
Constantly applying heat to our locks can leave them dry and brittle, meaning the strands become weaker and more likely to start falling out. Try going for heatless hairstyles more often to help prevent damage to your hair.
Use a natural shampoo and conditioner
There are many reasons to opt for a shampoo and conditioner with more natural ingredients but especially because the harsh chemicals contained in a lot of hair products can lead to damage. They can strip the hair of the natural oils so using something gentler can help minimise hair loss.
Include more antioxidants in your diet
Your diet plays a huge role in the overall health of your hair so it’s definitely worth taking a look at what you’re eating! Antioxidants are great for fighting the signs of stress (a common cause of hair loss) so consuming more blueberries, spinach, beans and legumes can go a long way in helping your locks.
Manage your stress levels
Stress can be a HUGE factor when it comes to hair loss and is often one of the leading causes. Learning to manage your stress levels can really help to stop hair loss in its tracks and help to keep your locks healthy.
Be wary of chemical treatments
Many chemical treatments can lead to hair loss as they are harsh and cause the hair shaft to weaken. Chemically bleaching or straightening your hair should be avoided if you want to minimise hair damage and loss.
Don’t underestimate the power of a scalp massage
Scalp massages are not only a great way to reduce stress but they also work to stimulate the hair follicles. Just a few minutes in the shower when you wash your hair can help to strengthen the strands and promote hair growth. Plus, it feels pretty good too!
Turn the temperature down
In the same way that heat styling tools can damage our hair, so to can scalding hot showers! Having the temperature turned right up can often lead to hair dryness and inflammation – not great for avoiding hair loss. We recommend turning the temperature down to be more gentle on your hair.
Be gentle with wet hair
We always recommend never combing your hair when wet – that’s when it’s at its most vulnerable! If you’re looking to avoid hair loss, try waiting for your hair to completely dry before softly combing through the strands.
Sleep on silk
A silk pillowcase is one of the best things you can do for your hair! Often our regular pillowcases can pull on our hair while we toss and turn at night, leading to hair breakage. If you often wake up with strands of lost hair all over your pillow, try switching to silk.
