Summer is all about spending days by the beach, relaxing with friends and enjoying the summer sun! We all know how important it is to protect our skin in the summer months (and all year round!) as the Aussie sun can be harsh. However, most of us don’t realise that it is just as important to protect our hair. Just as the sun can wreak havoc on our skin, our hair can also feel the consequences. We are here to share with you our top tips for protecting your hair from the sun and how to ensure it stays healthy and full of life!
Cover up your locks
As if we needed an excuse to bring out more cute summer accessories, a hat will be your best friend during these warm months. If you are going to be spending the day by the beach or you know you will be out in the sun for a long period of time, a hat will really help to protect your hair and scalp from the harsh effects of the sun. It can also help to protect your locks from wind (especially for those with longer hair) and prevent your hair from drying out. Now all you have to do is find the perfect hat and you’re good to go!
Go for loose hairstyles
It’s always a great idea to make sure your hair isn’t being pulled back too tightly but even more so in summer. The summer sun can cause our hair to become even more dry than usual and prone to breakage. Tying your hair back in a tight ponytail or braid can pull and tear at the strands, causing damage. A comfortable messy bun or loose braids are great for keeping your hair out of your face, without being too tight. It also keeps your frizz under control and your locks healthy!
Take precautions before hitting the water
One of the best parts about summer is swimming in the ocean or the pool! Unfortunately, our hair might not love it as much as we do. Before going swimming, it’s a great idea to apply a leave-in conditioner to your strands. This will not only add essential moisture and keep them from drying out, it will help to minimise absorption of chlorine and salt (AKA things our hair does not like!).
Stay hydrated
When it comes to hair care, keeping our bodies adequately hydrated is an often overlooked important step. Your hair needs hydration just as much as your body! Due to the heat, it’s easier for us to become dehydrated in the summer and this can lead to dry, dull and frizzy hair. Look after your body by ensuring you are drinking enough water throughout the day. Trust us, your hair will thank you for it!
Treat yourself
We don’t need any excuse for a little beauty indulgence but treating your hair to a hair mask or deep conditioning treatment is a great way to look after it during the summer months. As we’ve said, the harsh sun can really dry out our locks and a nourishing hair mask is a great way to add essential moisture back in. We also recommend keeping up with your regular salon visits, especially towards the end of summer. This will ensure you are regularly trimming off dry and damaged ends in order to keep your hair feeling fresh and healthy!
