There’s no denying it – colouring your hair is one of the best ways to change up your look when you’re in need of something new! It’s fun, it’s creative, and it can be a great way to embrace your unique style. When it comes to colouring your hair, however, your locks will require a little extra TLC. There’s no use going to all that trouble if you’re not going to put in the extra work to keep your hair looking fresh, luscious, and (most importantly) healthy. Here are our best tips for looking after colour treated hair.

Choose your shampoo with care

We always advise choosing your products with care, but when it comes to coloured hair, this becomes even more important! While having your hair coloured by a professional at a salon is always best (we *never* recommend DIY jobs), any type of dye job will cause some sort of drying and weakening of the hair. This is why choosing the right shampoo is so important. Always opt for products with natural, eco-friendly ingredients, that don’t use harsh chemicals that will only cause further damage to your hair. It’s also a great idea to choose a shampoo that has been specifically formulate for colour treated hair.

Conditioning is a steady process

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: don’t skip the conditioner! Colour treated hair needs all the nourishment and hydration it can get, which means conditioning with care is more important than ever. Take your time when doing this part of your haircare routine, coating the lengths of your hair and ensuring your strands are receiving that deep nourishment. Letting your conditioner rest for a couple of minutes will give it time to work its magic.

Book a date with a hair mask

Let’s face it – hair masks really are the best! Not only do they give you a chance to relax and unwind for a while, they’re also amazing for your hair. Since coloured hair is often dryer, using a deep conditioning mask once a week is a great way to put some hydration and nutrients back into your locks. As is the case with your shampoo (and other hair products!), opting for something with natural ingredients will always be better for your hair. Get your diary out and schedule in some time for some much needed hair lovin’!

Let those locks air dry

Any way you can reduce heat usage on your hair is a good thing, especially when it comes to hair that has been colour treated. Opting to air dry instead of blow drying is a great way to reduce heat damage on already weakened and dehydrated hair. The less heat you use on your strands, the more healthy, vibrant, and fresh you can keep that colour between salon visits!
