Unfortunately, dry hair is a problem that many of us are faced with – particularly the ends of our hair. Dry hair can feel almost impossible to get rid of, even when it seems to happen so easily! We are constantly shown products that promise to help with dry, brittle locks but it’s important to know why your hair is feeling this way in the first place! Here are some of the most common reasons why your hair might not be feeling its best.
Too many sulphates
You might have seen this word floating around, particularly when it comes to hair care products. Sulphates are a common ingredient in hair products, especially shampoo and conditioner. While they are effective from removing dirt from your hair, they also strip your locks of essential oils and nutrients. Not great for dry hair!
Without these natural oils, your hair will become dehydrated and dry, lacking its shine and lustre. We recommend opting for a sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner. Luckily, there are many options out there now and they are just as effective at removing dirt and grime from your hair – all without drying it out!
Not enough fat in your diet
This is one that is often overlooked, but what you eat can actually have a major impact on the health and quality of your hair! Healthy fats are an essential component of keeping your hair in good condition, particularly omega-3 fatty acids.
Whole food, healthy fats are fantastic for keeping your locks nourished and hydrated, including your scalp. They also help with hair elasticity and shine. If you are experiencing dry hair, try to up your healthy fats by including foods such as avocado, nuts, salmon and olive oil in your diet.
Too much exposure to the sun
This one is especially relevant as we are right in the middle of the hottest months of the year. We know that we have to take precautions when it comes to our skin and the sun, but we often forget about the damage it can do to our hair!
Excessive sun exposure can really leech all of the moisture from your hair and cause it to be quite dry and brittle. Sun-damaged hair can become fragile and lead to long-term damage – no thank you! If you know you will be spending a large amount of time in the sun, we recommend wearing a hat for hair (and skin!) protection.
Not using a heat protectant
While overusing heat styling tools is often a major culprit of dry hair, there’s no need to completely give them up. Make sure that you prep your hair with a heat protectant before styling. Trust us, your locks will thank you for it!
